Once an inland mecca for tourists and boaters, the Salton Sea is now on the brink of ecological disaster. Salinity levels threaten all aquatic life. Receding shorelines are responsible for toxic airborne dust from agricultural runoff. The next decade is crucial to prevent this disaster – by 2030 the lake could recede by 60%, killing all fish, and leaving millions of birds without this crucial migration stop. Children in the area already have the highest asthma rates in the state – the exposed toxins in the dry lake bed will create even more poisonous dust. Join us to learn more about how this came about, and the work being done to protect the lake in the longer term.
Craig Deutsche is currently managing editor of the Desert Report, published monthly by the California/Nevada Desert Committee of the Sierra Club.
