Magic of the Galapagos Islands
The monthly meeting of the Los Serranos Group of the Sierra Club is Tuesday, January 16, at 7:00 PM. Los Serranos members Ann and Farley Olander will give a presentation on the Galapagos Islands. Meeting is held in the Creative Corner room at The Goldy S. Lewis Community Center, 11200 Base Line Road, Rancho Cucamonga, CA. New members and the public are welcome. Ann and Farley Olander will share some of the Galapagos wonders that came alive for them by getting close-up to wildlife – wildlife that evolved unafraid of humans while isolated on the islands for millions of years. The volcanic landscape is both stark and beautiful. The striking wildlife ultimately prompted Darwin's origin of species theory.
Whether getting close-up to Galapagos tortoises, iguanas lounging, blue-footed boobies courting or great frigates strutting their inflated sacs to attract females, this "touch of Eden" captivated the Olanders. In April, 2016, they spent a week aboard a small catamaran with 8 other passengers and a naturalist who led two to three daily excursions from wet or dry landings on 10 different islands/islets.
The Olanders are eager to share the mystique of these Enchanted Isles, another name for the Galapagos Islands, 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador.
