Modern day travelers who visit South Georgia Island follow in the footsteps of James Cook who was the first to land on the island, southern ocean whalers of the early 20th century, and Ernest Shakleton, the great Antarctic explorer who is buried on the island. Today the whaling stations are quiet yet the island teems with the activity and sounds of an astonishing number and diversity of wildlife.
South Georgia Island is remote, rugged and stunningly beautiful providing sanctuary to penguins, albatrosses, petrels, elephant and fur seals, dolphins and whales. Colonies of hundreds of thousands of penquins can be seen close up as well as several species of albatross. Gigantic elephants seals share the beaches with the penguins. The marine ecosystem surrounding the island is one of the most biodiverse environments on Earth.
Beri has presented to our group several times in the past, most recently about his trip to Papua New Guinea. Beri and his wife, Ada, have visited all seven continents and have now been to 145 countries. Both are retired engineers living in Los Alamitos who when at home enjoy Max, their tortoise and many koi.
