In his book "Flame and Fortune in the American West," Professor Gregory Simon uses the Oakland Hills fire of 1991 as a case study to explore the complex history, crisis and aftermath of fires that sweep into cities from the urban edge. Simon explains that the devastating fires that ravage communities and the landscape are a direct result of where and how we build, why, and the infuence of underlying politics, planning and profit-making.
Recently, Simon visited Sonoma County to tour the burn areas from the October 2017 wildfires. He will be here Saturday, March 10 for a free public event to discuss his book - helping the community understand what has happened, what to watch out for, and what to talk about as the recovery and rebuilding process begins.
