February 22: Soil loss protections need strengthening

Recent heavy rains have caused scenes like this at a number of vineyards in Sonoma County. The County ordinance, VESCO (Vineyard Erosion and Sediment Control Ordinance) which is supposed to prevent this kind of erosion, contains broad “best management practices” to keep sediment from being washed into streams. These are clearly not good enough.

Stay tuned - VESCO practices are being reviewed this spring.
