Understanding California's New Composting Law, by Samantha Smith

compostCalifornia’s new commercial composting law, SB 1383, requires all California residents and businesses to compost their food scraps. The new law, signed by then Governor Jerry Brown in 2016 couldn’t come a moment too soon. Food waste in landfills is a huge problem for global warming, because when food rots in a landfill it produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

Sending food waste to compost facilities allows it to break down organically and produces nutrient-rich compost that can be added back to soil to enhance it, prevent erosion, and further nourish new plants.

compostHere in Napa, we are lucky to have a world-class compost facility that has been accepting food waste from consumers since 2014. The Napa Recycling and Composting Facility recently installed a high-tech composting system called a CASP which stands for Covered Aerated Static Pile. By utilizing aeration, automatic irrigation and advanced temperature control, the facility can keep their compost conditions optimal and improve the process overall.

If you haven’t toured Napa Recycling and Compost Facility, I would highly recommend it, as you can see firsthand all of the amazing equipment our facility has. They also sell the organic compost they produce, and you can request a delivery if you’re not able to pick it up. Learn more about what’s compostable at https://naparecycling.com/include-the-food.
