Climate activists turned out in force in at least a dozen locations in Redwood Chapter on September 20, determined to add their voices to the nationwide chorus demanding immediate action to halt global warming and avert climate catastrophe. Sonoma County activists tabling below:
Here's an account from Napa:
On Friday, September 20th, hundreds of us joined students in front of the Napa County Administration Building for Napa’s Youth Climate Strike. “We are not here to be hopeful”, they declared, “we are here to tell the truth about the climate emergency.” Student speakers told of their fears, anger, and frustration with the lack of action on climate change. Other speakers included elected officials and climate activists from the community.
Napa Sierra Club Chair Xulio Soriano told about his Mixteca indigenous heritage and his experience as a student needing to disobey authorities to protest racism and bigotry at his school. He reminded the students to reach out to youth from all backgrounds as they expand their movement.
We heard a message from Congressman Mike Thompson, who thanked the students for “stepping outside your comfort zone and making sure every elected official knows where you stand.”
Cindy Grupp, Napa County resident and grandmother, said “I’m here because I have three grandchildren. This is their future. Are they even going to have a future?” Napa County Supervisor Brad Wagenknecht commented, while listening to the student speeches, that “our best efforts for the environment have almost always been youth led. It’s good that they are building a critical mass for action on climate change.” Student Madeline Maurer, Vintage High Sierra Club Chair, concurred, “Strength is in numbers. We need to all show the government that everyone cares. We all want change.”
