Protect the Arctic
Protect the Arctic
The Arctic is a vast, icy region located at the northernmost part of Earth, consisting of ice-covered ocean, tundra, and permafrost. This unique ecosystem is home to diverse wildlife such as polar bears, seals, and whales, and it also serves as a breeding ground for migratory birds. The Arctic also plays a critical role in regulating the planet’s climate.
Threats from Fossil Fuels
Rising temperatures are causing the rapid melting of sea ice, leading to the loss of habitat for iconic species like polar bears and putting indigenous communities at risk. The melting of permafrost releases stored greenhouse gasses, further exacerbating global warming.
Sierra Club is Fighting Back
Because of decades of work from Sierra Club activists, the Gwich'in peoples, and our partners, we saw a major victory for the Arctic. We successfully pushed President Biden to take the historic step and cancel all oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Local Voices
“Our culture is the land: caribou, moose, birds, and fish. We have recently finished our hunting season—the primary time when we can get the resources we need to exist throughout the year, both culturally and practically. However, the future of the Arctic Refuge and our existence is at risk.”
