On a party-line vote Republicans in the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee approved the nomination to go to the full Senate.

More than 240 environmental, animal welfare and conservation organizations sent a letter to House and Senate leadership today, calling on them to reject riders in 2018 Interior Department and Environmental Protection Agency appropriations legislation that would erode the Endangered Species Act and other safeguards for wildlife. The letter comes as Congress is poised to pass yet another continuing resolution that could pave the way for negotiations to begin on a final omnibus appropriations bill for FY 2018. This year’s House and Senate bills currently include provisions that would strip away federal protections for wolves and several other species, choke off funding for listed species if wildlife agencies cannot complete their five-year species reviews on time and block protections for sage-grouse, among many others.

FirstEnergy subsidiaries Monongahela Power and Potomac Edison have rejected conditions that the West Virginia Public Service Commission (PSC) imposed for the transfer of the Pleasants Power Station. Additionally, the companies will not seek rehearing of a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) order that rejected the transfer for not being consistent with the public interest. These decisions put into the question the fate of the coal plant, raising the possibility that it could soon retire.

LA City Council Takes Major Step Toward Electrifying Buildings LOS ANGELES, C.A. -- Today, the Los Angeles City Council voted to direct the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to establish building electrification targets in its 2018 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). The targets should align with the city’s existing greenhouse gas reduction goals of 45% and 65% reductions by 2025 and 2035. The Council motion also takes steps to identify other strategies to reduce gas consumption in buildings and to study the costs and implications of zero emission buildings.

TODAY: Glendale City Council to Vote on Pausing Grayson Power Plant Expansion "Today, ahead of the Glendale City Council meeting, the Glendale Environmental coalition will call on the City Council to halt the Grayson Power Plant expansion and demand a study on clean energy alternatives to power the City of Glendale. As the state assembly revisits legislation to power all of California with 100% clean energy, this vote reinforces the momentum building for 100% renewable energy throughout the state."
