Washington, DC -- Today, EPA Administrator Michael Regan will announce the first major climate pollution rule under President Biden: an 85% reduction in hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by 2036. HFCs are typically used as residential and commercial refrigerants but these superpollutant greenhouse gases are hundreds to thousands of times more potent than carbon dioxide. Phasing out HFCs is expected to avert 0.5 °C (0.9 °F) of global warming by the end of the century.

Today, California Senator Alex Padilla announced introduction of legislation, co-sponsored by Senator Feinstein, that will protect and increase access to over 1 million acres of public lands and more than 500 miles of rivers throughout the state. The Protecting Unique and Beautiful Landscapes by Investing in California (PUBLIC) Lands Act is complementary to a package of bills that passed the House of Representatives in February, which were championed by Representatives Carbajal, Chu, and Huffman.

GREAT FALLS, Mont.— Environmental groups filed a lawsuit today against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers over a nationwide permit that allows streamlined development of oil and gas pipelines through wetlands, streams and rivers.

Kansas City, MO -- Evergy, the largest electric utility in Kansas and the second largest in Missouri, filed its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) with Missouri regulators today. The good news is the utility proposes 3,200 megawatts of solar by 2032 and 1,000 megawatts of wind power by 2026. The utility also proposes to close the 66-year-old Lawrence coal plant by 2023 and Jeffrey Unit 3 by 2030.

Today, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker announced a much anticipated proposal for sweeping legislation aimed at reforming the state’s energy sector, phasing out fossil fuel use, and investing in initiatives to lower emissions and mitigate the climate crisis. The Consumers and Climate First Act is the latest of several omnibus energy bills, including the Clean Energy Jobs Act, which has won broad support for it’s policy pillars to address the economic and public health crisis, the racial and economic justice crisis, and a crisis of utility corruption.
