A new report on the potential impacts of Plaquemines LNG was released and sent this morning in a set of joint comments from Sierra Club and Healthy Gulf to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which urge the agency to deny the facility’s request to produce an additional 3.2 MTPA (million metric tons per year) of fracked gas. The organizations also argue that FERC must prepare a new Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that fully analyzes the facility’s potential impact on the environment, climate, and environmental justice communities in the construction of the Plaquemines LNG export terminal.

UTAH – Sierra Club has filed a suit against the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for approving two coal lease modifications authorizing a 7 million-ton expansion of the Lila Canyon underground coal mine that would cause severe climate damage, impacting air quality, and diminished visibility in natural areas like the Book Cliffs Mountain Range, Turtle Canyon Wilderness area, and the San Rafael Swell. If allowed to go forward, the expansion would result in more than 11 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

New York – Yesterday, Judge Robert A. Onofry dismissed a lawsuit filed by Danskammer Energy LLC, seeking to overturn the Department of Environmental Conservation's denial of a permit necessary for Danskammer to build a new fracked gas plant on the banks of the Hudson River in Orange County.

Washington, DC - Today, the Department of Transportation and the Department of Energy proposed nationwide guidelines for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations that will be funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. 

The guidelines aim to provide standardization for EV charging stations across the country, help EV drivers build confidence for traveling long distances, and ultimately accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.

Sierra Club and other public health and environmental groups sued EPA to ensure that the agency takes timely action to reduce ozone pollution across the country. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, on behalf of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments, Downwinders at Risk, HEAL Utah, and Sierra Club, represented by Earthjustice.

The Sierra Club held a press conference to release a report on the economic feasibility of JEA transitioning away from fossil fuel energy generation to clean renewable energy. Key findings show that retiring and replacing JEA’s Northside Coal Units (Units 1 and 2) with clean, renewable energy will save customers $15 million to $60 million per year while cutting climate pollution and local air pollution emissions by more than half.

ARIZONA – Today the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) reaffirmed its April decision in a 3 to 2 vote, denying a rehearing for a certificate of environmental compatibility for Salt River Project's proposed expansion of the gas-fired Coolidge Generating Station. In May, SRP filed for a rehearing, and today's renewed decision closes out the saga at the ACC. Any further action by SRP will need to be pursued in Superior Court.
