Today, in the midst of National Drive Electric Week, the Sierra Club, Clean AIRE NC, NC League of Conservation Voters, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, NC Conservation Network and the NC Justice Center released a report of independent modeling and analysis of the state of North Carolina’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure and the significant benefits of the state transitioning away from fossil fuel vehicles to electric ones.

In response to the ongoing labor negotiations between freight rail workers and the railroad companies, the Sierra Club is in solidarity with the more than 100,000 rail workers negotiating for safer and better working conditions, including changes to a strict no time off attendance policy that has made it difficult for workers to choose between working and attending a family member’s funeral, going to the doctor, or taking sick days.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the Sierra Club joins over 150 advocacy groups in launching the #SolutionsForPollution campaign. This campaign calls on the Biden Administration to set the strongest possible pollution standards to meet the president’s commitment to slash climate pollution by at least half by 2030 and to protect our health, communities, air, water, land and wildlife from dangerous pollution.

Sacramento, CA - Today, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) passed the Advanced Clean Cars II (ACC II) rule, which will transition the state to 100% zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) sales by 2035. The adoption of the ACC II rule follows a 2020 executive order from Governor Newsom calling for this transition. Sierra Club California, along with numerous other environmental NGOs and environmental justice organizations, has advocated for years for electrifying our transportation sector, and this rule will accelerate that transition.

SACRAMENTO, CA – Yesterday, Toyota announced its support for the state of California’s authority to set vehicle emissions standards under the Clean Air Act. During the Trump administration, Toyota and other automakers attacked this authority and sided with Trump’s rollback of key climate and clean air protections.

Boston, MA -  Last night, Governor Baker signed a transportation bond bill with over $11 billion in funding for a wide range of clean transportation projects, including making streets safer for biking and walking, investing in fare-free bus pilot programs, electrifying buses and commuter rail, cleaning up pollution from heavy-duty vehicles, building out electric vehicle charging infrastructure, promoting e-bikes as a replacement for car trips through rebates, and repair our bridges and roads.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Sierra Club and Elders Climate Action (ECA) sued the Postal Service for its failure to produce documents in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for records related to the Oshkosh contract for the production of up to 165,000 mail delivery vehicles. Sierra Club and ECA seek a court order requiring USPS to release any improperly withheld records without further delay.

Boston, MA - Today, a coalition of 17 states, D.C., and Quebec – working through the Multi-State Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Task Force facilitated by the Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management (NESCAUM) – released an action plan to curb pollution from trucks and buses. The action plan makes specific policy recommendations that these signatory states, jurisdictions, and utilities should adopt.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, after over a year of public pressure over the Postal Service’s decision to only make 10 percent of its new truck fleet electric, the agency announced it would commit to at least 40 percent of the fleet to be electric.
