Great Falls, MT— Conservation and landowners groups filed their opening brief today in their federal lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s illegal approval of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. The groups are suing the Army Corps of Engineers over its failure to adequately analyze the project’s effects on local waterways, lands, wildlife, and communities along its 1,200-mile route.

It has been reported that the Keystone 1 pipeline -- part of the pipeline system that would include the controversial proposed Keystone XL pipeline -- has sprung yet another leak, this time in North Dakota. The cause and size of the spill are still under investigation.

The groups are suing the Army Corps of Engineers over its streamlined approval of the pipeline, and today added claims challenging the Corps’ failure to ensure that endangered species would not be harmed by the project.

Ignoring concerns from local landowners, Tribes, and environmental groups, the Nebraska Supreme Court today affirmed the Public Service Commission’s (PSC) approval of a route for the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline through the state.

This weekend, it was reported that an inspection by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) revealed that TC Energy - formerly TransCanada - likely violated pipeline safety standards by failing to provide suitable coating material at numerous locations along the Keystone Pipeline, the southern leg of the company’s controversial proposed Keystone XL.

Conservation groups filed a federal lawsuit today challenging the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ illegal approval of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline to be constructed through hundreds of rivers, streams, and wetlands without evaluating the project’s impacts as required by the National Environmental Policy Act and the Clean Water Act. The groups also sent notices of their intent to sue President Donald Trump, the Army Corps, and the companies seeking to build Keystone XL and its power-line infrastructure over the project’s lethal threats to endangered species, including the whooping crane.
