ST PAUL, MINNESOTA – The Minnesota Supreme Court Wednesday issued a decision that allows a proposed fracked gas power plant to receive Public Utilities Commission (PUC) approval without environmental review in Minnesota. The decision returns the case to the Court of Appeals to determine whether approving the plant is in the public interest.

Springfield, IL - The Illinois Pollution Control Board’s finalization of coal ash regulations makes significant strides to rectify coal's toxic footprint in Illinois. The rules create a comprehensive framework for the detection and clean up of coal ash contamination of groundwater -- the first in the state’s history to specifically address this pollution. Not only do the new rules create a new precedent for cleaning up coal ash and restoring the environment, they make necessary improvements to public participation and environmental justice. In finalizing these rules, the Board rejected utility demands to exclude certain ash ponds from the rules and expanded transparency, demonstrating its commitment to a more fair and open process.

Richmond, VA-- Today the Sierra Club filed the expert testimony of Rachel Wilson of Synapse Energy Economics with the State Corporation Commission (SCC) opposing Appalachian Power Company’s (APCo) request to charge ratepayers to maintain the Amos and Mountaineer coal plants in West Virginia through 2040 rather than investing in more cost-effective clean energy.

Mobile County, Ala. — Last Friday, Sierra Club and GASP filed a petition with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) challenging the Alabama Department of Environmental Management’s (ADEM) issuance of a final Title V Permit for Plant Barry near Mobile. The permit was issued on February 2, 2021.

Filed by Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), Grand Canyon Trust, Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment and WildEarth Guardians, the groups have been seeking to protect Bryce Canyon National Park and the local environment from the coal mining expansion for the last ten years.

Brownsville, TX -- Today, news broke that Annova LNG has abandoned its plans for its LNG fracked gas export terminal when it filed a request with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to withdraw its certificate.

Annova LNG, backed by Exelon, Black and Veatch, Enbridge, and Kiewit Energy group, was one of three fracked gas export terminals proposed for the Rio Grande Valley. If built, Annova LNG would have destroyed wetlands, blocked a wildlife corridor threatening the survival of endangered wildlife, and put communities needlessly at risk.
