This morning, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) are announcing plans to cancel billions worth of spending to repower three gas plants, totaling more than 1.6 gigawatts. Instead, the City will invest in transmission improvements and at least 3 gigawatts of clean energy and battery storage resources that will create thousands of union jobs.

Nathan Small introduced the Energy Transition Act (SB 489) in the New Mexico state Senate, setting a path for the state’s transition from dirty, expensive fuels to a clean, renewable-energy economy. The historic bill would make New Mexico a national leader in moving toward 100 percent carbon-free electricity by 2045.

Denver, CO – This afternoon, the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) provided its initial approval of Xcel Energy’s Colorado Energy Plan (CEP) to close coal-fired units 1 and 2 at the Comanche Generating Station in Pueblo ten years ahead of schedule. Colorado’s largest utility will replace that coal generation with a $2.5 billion investment in mostly renewable energy and battery storage that is estimated by Xcel to save ratepayers at least $213 million. The PUC will formalize their support in a written decision, which is due by Tuesday, September 4th.
The Oregon Public Utilities Commission-- the same commission that required PacifiCorp to do an economic analysis of it coal fleet—just decided to keep the results of that analysis secret. Sierra Club had challenged the company’s request to hide the study from the public.
Sierra Club and allies have entered into an agreement with Duke Energy Carolinas that will remove barriers to clean energy, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and bring a $25 million investment in electric vehicle infrastructure that is unprecedented in the Southeast.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Less than 24 hours after Donald Trump proclaimed that he had “ended the war on American energy,” the Washington Post reported Trump will be asking for a 72 percent budget cut for clean energy and energy efficiency programs. The Borough of West Chester, Pennsylvania on Wednesday became the 45th municipality in the United States and second in Pennsylvania to commit to transition to 100 percent clean, renewable energy. The Borough Council voted unanimously to establish a goal of moving West Chester to 100 percent clean and renewable energy just a week after nearby Phoenixville made a similar 100 percent commitment.
