Washington, D.C. – Today, Reuters reported that Donald Trump intends to attack progress in the U.S. on clean vehicles, including efforts that have saved the American people billions this year alone.

The document obtained by Reuters focuses on major reversals such as rolling back the Biden-Harris administration’s new vehicle emission standards; blocking California from setting its own stronger than federal vehicle standards; and reversing the Inflation Reduction Act’s electric vehicle tax credit, which has benefited more than 300,000 EV drivers and saved consumers over $2 billion so far this year.

In response to the reports, Sierra Club Executive Director Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Donald Trump wants to make cars more expensive and our air dirtier while boosting China’s ability to dominate the global electric vehicle market. In trying to make electric vehicles more expensive, Trump will reverse progress on our nation’s transition to EVs, hamstringing the U.S. auto industry, delivering more pollution to our neighborhoods, and taking away people’s choice to purchase clean cars.

“If Donald Trump wants to make cars more affordable, boost American car manufacturing, and protect our health, he should leave his misguided transition plans in the scrap heap.”
