Nationwide– Environmental, health, environmental justice, and faith groups sent a letter today to governors of states that have adopted critical pollution-slashing programs to address heavy-duty vehicle pollution.
The corporate interests in the trucking industry have launched a coordinated multi-state effort to pressure states to delay implementation of the Heavy-duty Omnibus (HDO) and Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) standards, programs that help to cut truck pollution and improve air quality for millions of people across the nation.
Each of these states led a comprehensive process carefully studying the benefits of the rules, leading public workshops, engaging industry and communities, and providing truck makers helpful considerations such as sufficient lead time and compliance flexibilities.
“States across the nation moving forward with these clean trucks standards ensures more Americans are breathing clean air, thriving in healthy communities, and advancing the clean energy economy,” said Katherine García, director of the Sierra Club’s Clean Transportation for All campaign. “Each of these Governors demonstrated bold leadership when their states committed to the technologically-feasible clean truck standards. We urge governors to stay the course in the face of truck industry lobbying and begin timely implementation so that communities can begin experiencing the many benefits including cleaner air and family-sustaining jobs.”
