WASHINGTON, DC –  A new report reveals that Toyota is slowing its production plans for electric vehicles (EVs). The company is slashing EV production plans by a third by 2026, decreasing its goal from 1.5 million to 1 million.

Toyota, which currently only has one fully electric vehicle for sale in the U.S. but has engaged in heavy greenwashing in its marketing, using the phrases “Beyond Zero” and “electrified” for vehicles that still run on fossil fuels.

Toyota shareholders have taken notice and expressed disappointment in its lack of investment in EVs.

In response to the announcement, Sierra Club Clean Transportation for All Director Katherine García issued the following statement:

“Toyota – a global automaker that sells millions of vehicles in the U.S. – is one of the most egregious companies in the auto industry for failing to manufacture EVs, consistently  lobbying against clean cars, and blatant greenwashing. Rather than leading on pollution-free electric vehicles, Toyota is still banking on tired hybrid, combustion-powered vehicles that run solely on fossil fuels.

“We’re in the midst of a climate crisis, and instead of meeting the moment, Toyota is doubling down on fossil fuel cars that will remain on roads for decades to come. We need all automakers to deliver the electric vehicles required for a healthier, more sustainable future.”
