WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee held a hearing on the nomination of Shannon Estenoz to serve as Deputy Secretary of the Department of the Interior.
Estenoz currently serves as the department’s assistant secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks. She earned degrees from Florida State University and was appointed to positions under Democratic and Republican governors of Florida. During the Obama administration, she also served as DOI’s director of Everglades restoration initiatives.
In response, Athan Manuel, director of Sierra Club’s Lands Protection Program, issued the following statement:
“Protecting our public land shouldn’t be a partisan issue – it benefits our environment, our communities, and the future our children and grandchildren will inherit. Time and time again, Shannon Estenoz has shown she can provide thoughtful, common sense leadership to protect our unparalleled landscapes and waters. We urge the Senate to act on her nomination quickly and confirm this highly qualified nominee.”
