Reno City Council is scheduled to consider a resolution opposing a rate hike proposed by NV Energy. The resolution is a big next step in preventing NV Energy's contentious proposal to escalate the Basic Service Charge (BSC) from $16.50 to $45.30 for residents in Northern Nevada. This proposed surge, changing the rate structure for ratepayers and disincentivizing energy conservation, has sparked widespread concern among the region's residents.

This resolution will empower the City of Reno to send a letter to the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (PUCN), asking that the PUCN say no to NV Energy’s proposal.

Recently, the City entered into a partnership agreement with NV Energy with guiding principles of equity and climate action. Opponents of this rate change proposal have argued that this proposal violates those guiding principles, on the grounds that this proposal will disproportionately impact low income ratepayers and will disincentivize rooftop solar by requiring solar customers to pay almost $50 to NV Energy each month even if they are generating 100% of their own energy.

What: Reno City Council Members will be voting on a resolution opposing NV Energy’s proposal, and hearing public comment from many community members, solar businesses, and environmental organizations in support of the resolution. Councilmembers will also be available for media inquiries
