Washington, DC – Solar energy made up over 50 percent of new U.S. power generation for the first time ever in 2023, according to a new report released today by consulting firm Wood Mackenzie and the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA).
According to the International Energy Agency, solar is now the cheapest source of electricity in most countries.
In response to the news, Sierra Club’s Chief Energy Officer Holly Bender released the following statement:
“It’s inspiring to see this solar surge. A cleaner grid supports clean air, clean water, lower energy prices, and more resilient communities. Our movement’s hard work is paying off – this positive trend shows the real world impact of strong clean energy incentives in the Inflation Reduction Act. Renewable energy is key to a safe and livable future, and we will continue to advocate swift implementation of the IRA to promote its growth.”
