House Republicans Advance Resolution Reaffirming Their Loyalty to Fossil Fuel Executives Over Communities

Washington, DC – House Republicans passed a resolution yesterday out of the Rules Committee criticizing the Biden administration for its efforts to advance climate action and environmental justice and protect communities from dangerous proposed fossil fuel projects.

The resolution comes in response to an announcement from the Department of Energy last week that it will pause approvals for new methane gas (LNG) export facilities while it reevaluates its outdated criteria for determining whether a project is in the public interest. There is clear and growing evidence that gas exports are inconsistent with global climate targets, destroy local communities and critical ecosystems, and increase domestic energy costs.

In response, Sierra Club Beyond Fossil Fuels Director Mahyar Sorour released the following statement:

“The fossil fuel industry certainly got their money’s worth this week, with their congressional champions pushing forward a resolution that could have been written by API itself. This pointless resolution does nothing but reaffirm that Congressional Republicans care more about their benefactors in the fossil fuel industry than about protecting our communities from deadly pollution or easing high energy costs for American families. The Biden administration’s moves to halt the rubber-stamping of disastrous new fossil fuel projects and advance the transition to a clean energy future are wins for the climate, our communities, and our economy. House Republicans’ shameless efforts to push back against them to further line the pockets of fossil fuel executives only serve to remind the public of whose interests they’re really looking out for.”
