Washington, DC – Norman Lear has passed away. A longtime advocate for the environment and the founder of People For the American Way, Lear was 101.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Norman Lear was a giant, a fierce patriot, and one of the kindest people I’ve ever known. I am heartbroken by the news of his passing. Norman was a dear friend, who I had the honor of working closely with when I led People For the American Way, which he founded. He and his wife Lyn were also committed environmentalists. They co-founded the Environmental Media Association in 1989 to promote environmental action in Hollywood. My deepest condolences are with Lyn, his children, and the rest of Norman’s family. We’ll work tirelessly to carry on your legacy, my friend.”
