ALBANY, NY-- Today, Governor Hochul vetoed a well-vetted bill that is critical for Empire Wind’s cable landing to come onshore and connect to the electric grid. This comes just over a week after the Governor and the Public Service Commission rejected an inflation adjustment petition that would’ve supported existing offshore wind projects while protecting ratepayers from volatile and unpredictable fracked gas prices.
These offshore wind projects are critical to meeting New York’s climate goals and these delays threaten to extend the life of fracked gas power plants across Long Island and New York City. New York’s gas-fired power plants pose a significant risk to public health.
In response, Sierra Club New York Field Manager David Alicea released the following statement:
“The Sierra Club is deeply disappointed by the Governor’s recent actions to delay offshore wind. The Governor’s decision puts family-supporting jobs, public health, and our climate at risk and calls into question her commitment to New York’s climate goals. It’s critical that the Governor mitigate the impact of her decisions and ensure NYSERDA moves forward with additional renewable energy solicitations to minimize further delays.”
