Washington, DC – This afternoon, Donald Trump was indicted by a federal grand jury for his efforts to overturn the free and fair 2020 election and his role in the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Ben Jealous released the following statement:
“Our democracy is something we take pride in. We teach it to our children, we celebrate it, and, too often over the course of America’s history, we are reminded of just how fragile it is. In 2020, we held a free and fair election. Donald Trump spread lies to undermine it, he sought to corrupt anyone in his path to help him overturn it, and when that didn’t work, he played the pivotal role in a violent insurrection. More than 900 days later, America is making it clear that no one, not even a former president, is above the law. This is merely a first step, but it is a critical one to reaffirm our democracy and hold accountable those who seek to dismantle it.”
