Washington, DC – Today, Congressman John Sarbanes and Senator Amy Klobuchar reintroduced the Freedom to Vote Act. This bill seeks to increase safe, secure, and equitable voting access for all, especially those who have historically dealt with the highest barriers to voting, including communities of color, people with disabilities, and students. Additionally, this bill would rein in money in politics and shine a light on companies—especially the fossil fuel industry—that spend money to erode our democracy and undermine the will of the people.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“The right to vote is inextricably tied to climate justice. As the climate crisis impacts us all, it's imperative that every American have equal and unfettered access to the ballot box. Passage of the Freedom To Vote Act means all of us have the opportunity to lift our voices for policies that ensure no community is treated as a sacrifice zone for corporate interests who place profits over people. Congress should act urgently against the dueling crisis we face as a nation, where Americans continue to lose access to a healthy planet alongside their rights to vote for leadership that will act courageously to save us all."
