Washington, DC — Over the weekend, global leaders at the G7 summit announced their continued support for global Liquefied Methane Gas (LNG) investments. The decision to back LNG directly undermines goals to phase out fossil fuels, transition to clean energy, and limit global warming to 1.5ºC. Additionally, this decision contradicts last year’s G7 commitment to end international public finance for fossil fuels by the end of 2022.

In recent weeks, numerous organizations have urged the Biden administration to oppose these efforts, clarify that new LNG projects risk locking in fossil fuels, and reject hydrogen-readiness as a justification for expanding LNG. Instead, President Biden signaled his support for expanding global LNG projects, going against his climate and environmental justice commitments. Additionally, climate and environmental organizations planned over 50 actions in 22 countries in an effort to urge Japan and other G7 countries to oppose new fossil fuel development.

Below is a statement from Talia Calnek-Sugin, Associate Director of Legislative and Administrative Advocacy at Sierra Club:

“Instead of doing the right thing and drawing the line at no new fossil fuel investments, President Biden and the rest of the G7 leaders made the decision to support new LNG terminals that already wreak havoc on communities along the Gulf Coast and worsen the impacts of climate change. We will not stop pushing back until this administration walks the talk on its climate commitments and stands with our communities, not the fossil fuel industry and its allies both here and abroad.”
