WASHINGTON, DC - Today, a key Senate committee advanced Julie Su, President Biden’s nominee for labor secretary. Su is a civil rights lawyer, a former California labor commissioner, and is the current acting head of the Department of Labor. Next, the full Senate will hold a confirmation vote.

In response, Sierra Club’s Labor and Economic Justice Director Derrick Figures released the following statement:

“Having a labor secretary fully committed to workers’ rights and safety is of critical importance, and Julie Su is the right person for the job. She has a strong history of enforcing labor laws and advocating for vulnerable workers, such as immigrants. She would also be the first Asian American to serve as a secretary in Biden’s Cabinet. The Sierra Club urges the Senate to act swiftly and confirm Julie Sue as secretary of labor.”
