Washington, DC – As House Republicans prepare to bring their extreme polluter wishlist to the floor in exchange for raising the debt ceiling and averting financial crisis, they’ve reportedly made changes to the bill in the middle of the night in hopes of garnering the support of some holdouts within their caucus. The changes would largely make the bill, which already called for slashing investments in environmental justice, climate, and other critical programs as well as speeding up approval of polluting fossil fuel projects, even more extreme.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Ben Jealous released the following statement:
“Speaker McCarthy’s middle-of-the-night gambit to pick up a few more votes makes it all the more clear that this reckless proposal is going nowhere. We were glad to see President Biden commit to vetoing this disastrous bill, and we urge House Republicans to end these dangerous hostage negotiations and pass clean legislation.”
