WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee took up the so-called Homeowner Energy Freedom Act. This bill would repeal programs for energy efficiency, home electrification rebates, and workforce development included in the Inflation Reduction Act.
“Congressional Republicans are wasting the taxpayer’s time and money as they conjure up fake culture wars to cover-up their efforts to repeal billions of dollars available for households to lower energy costs and create jobs for contractors installing clean appliances,” Sierra Club Director of the Building Electrification campaign Jessica Tritsch said. “The reality is, by passing the Inflation Reduction Act, President Biden and Congressional Democrats invested in making energy efficiency, weatherization and electrification available for all income-levels, while also curbing dangerous pollution – especially in low-income and communities of color where the burden is especially high. Rather than spreading lies and misinformation, Americans need Congress focusing on ensuring more Americans have access to programs like this.”
"Washingtonians who want to electrify their homes may lose access to millions of dollars in federal incentives,” said Sept Gernez, Acting Director of the Washington State Sierra Club. "If passed, Congresswoman McMorris Rogers' 'Homeowner Energy Freedom Act' will take away critical financial aid to help working families replace polluting gas appliances with cleaner electric alternatives and heating systems."
