WASHINGTON, D.C. -- This week, a coalition of groups is rallying in Washington, D.C. to urge President Biden to oppose ConocoPhillips’ massive Willow oil and gas operation on Alaska’s North Slope.
On Friday, March 3, 2023 at 4 p.m., an in-person rally opposing the massive oil and gas extraction project will be held at Lafayette Square, steps from the White House in Washington, D.C. Members of the media are encouraged to attend.
If ConocoPhillips is allowed to move forward with the project, it would be one of the largest oil and gas development projects on public lands, emitting nearly 300 million metric tons of carbon pollution into the atmosphere. The Willow project has been roundly criticized by Indigenous communities and environmental groups, citing its massive increase in carbon pollution and threats to wildlife, lands and waters, and traditional Indigenous subsistence practices.
A final decision is due no earlier than March 6.
