World Energy Outlook Highlights Critical Need to Transition to Clean Energy

Reliance on Fossil Fuels, like Oil and Gas, Lead to Energy Insecurity and High Prices

WASHINGTON, D.C.– The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released its annual World Energy Outlook (WEO) and it underscores how critical the clean energy transition is for global security and energy price stability. The report finds that the global energy crisis, spurred in large part by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has been felt hardest by low-income communities, but is blunted in regions with a strong commitment to renewable sources of energy.

In response, Sierra Club Senior Director of Energy Campaigns Kelly Sheehan released the following statement:

“The oil and gas industry has attempted to capitalize on the global energy crisis by raising prices and attempting to push through risky gas infrastructure projects that would lock us into a reliance on fossil fuels for decades to come. Today’s report demonstrates that we don’t need LNG export facilities or any new fossil fuels to meet our energy needs and, in fact, the solutions to the climate and energy crises are the same: clean energy. Reliance on oil and gas globally keeps us tied to volatile energy prices and political instability around the world. Solar, wind, and battery storage technology are affordable, reliable, and more necessary than ever.”
