WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced she will not seek reelection as leader of the House Democratic caucus in the 118th Congress, but will remain representing California’s 12th district. The Sierra Club applauds the Congresswoman’s strong leadership and success for nearly three decades.
In response, Sierra Club President Ramon Cruz released the following statement:
"On behalf of Sierra Club and grassroots movement partners alike, we celebrate and congratulate Speaker Pelosi on what has been a historic tenure of congressional leadership, including being the first woman to serve as the Speaker of the House.
“Speaker Pelosi’s relentless fight to enact policies ranging from addressing our changing climate including the historic passage of the Inflation Reduction Act and the Affordable Care Act, preserving and protecting our natural and wild spaces, defending direct attacks to our democracy and system of governance, and more are both applauded and celebrated, as she announced she will not seek leadership re-election in the 118th Congress.
"Sierra Club and our movement at-large is grateful for the Speaker’s skilled, strategic, and collaborative leadership that has produced countless critical wins for our communities, democracy and planet."
