Declaración del Sierra Club sobre el Retiro del Magistrado Stephen Breyer

Washington, DC — Hoy se anunció que el magistrado de la Corte Suprema Stephen Breyer se retirará al final de este mandato en junio. 

 

Breyer ha servido en la alta corte durante 27 años, en los cuales consistentemente reconoció la obligación legal del gobierno de proteger la salud pública y el medio ambiente, y el derecho del público a tener acceso a las cortes de justicia para exigir responsabilidades al gobierno y la industria. También dejó clara la diferencia entre hechos y política. El nominado para ocupar la vacante de Breyer tiene que ser justo, bien cualificado y representar estas cualidades.

 

 

“El Sierra Club celebra las casi tres décadas de servicio público del Magistrado Breyer en las que afirmó la libertades cívicas; defendió nuestro derecho a respirar aire limpio, beber agua limpia, y amar a quien elijamos; exigir responsabilidades a los funcionarios electos, y tener acceso a cuidados médicos económicos.

 

“La Corte Suprema tiene la gran y solemne responsabilidad de defender los valores de la Constitución y mantener fielmente la letra y el espíritu de las leyes sobre salud pública, medio ambiente, y derechos civiles y laborales. Como el más alto tribunal del país, la Corte Suprema tiene que estar compuesta de magistrados que sea justos, ecuánimes y reflexivos. La decisión sobre el nuevo miembro influenciará la dirección de nuestro país en las próximas décadas.

 

“Los esfuerzos republicanos de politizar la Corte Suprema han socavado la confianza pública en ella y amenazan su debido papel en la democracia. Para asegurarse de que la Corte Suprema no se incline aún más hacia quienes buscan satisfacer sus agendas políticas, el Presidente Biden tiene que nominar a alguien que continúe el legado del Magistrado Breyer y actuar en favor del interés público”.

Sierra Club Statement On Justice Stephen Breyer’s Retirement

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, news broke that Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer intends to retire at the end of the Court’s term in June.

Breyer has served on the high court for 27 years, consistently recognizing the government’s obligation under the law to protect public health and the environment, protecting the public’s right to access the courts to hold government and industries accountable, and clearly distinguishing between facts and politics. The nominee to fill Justice Breyer’s seat must be fair-minded, highly qualified, and embody those same qualities.
 
In response, Sierra Club President Ramón Cruz released the following statement:

“The Sierra Club celebrates Justice Breyer’s nearly three decades of public service affirming our civil liberties and upholding our right to breathe clean air, drink clean water, love who we choose, hold elected officials accountable, and access affordable healthcare. 

“The Supreme Court has the great and solemn responsibility to uphold the values of our Constitution and keep faith with the letter and spirit of the nation’s core public health, environmental, civil rights, and labor laws. As the highest court in the country, the Supreme Court must be composed of justices that are fair, even-handed, and thoughtful, and the decision on the next Supreme Court justice will shape the direction of our country for generations to come. 

“Republican efforts to politicize the Supreme Court have undermined public trust in the Court and threaten its proper role in our democracy. To ensure the Supreme Court does not further tilt towards those seeking to advance their political agendas, President Biden must nominate someone who will continue Justice Breyer’s legacy and act in the people’s interest.”
