Washington, DC – Today, House Republicans will release a strategy that uses the words climate change. The plans are expected to detail numerous measures that not only reject the scientific consensus on efforts required to address the climate crisis but would exacerbate it.
In response, Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce released the following statement:
“The best mitigation efforts in the world will not be able to capture the pollution Kevin McCarthy espouses. McCarthy’s latest attempt to greenhouse gaslight the American public will accomplish two things: intensify the climate crisis and further line the pockets of the corporate polluters that have long bankrolled Washington Republicans.
“The overwhelming majority of Americans have been demanding action on the climate crisis for years, while Republicans mocked or ignored their pleas. Attaching “climate” to today’s efforts does not change that. The second one looks at this “plan,” they’ll see it’s rotten with the same fossil fuel proposals driving this crisis that Congressional Republicans have long promoted. It shouldn’t be a shock to anyone that McCarthy never learned what’s in a name.
“Despite today’s theatrics, the Sierra Club does applaud McCarthy and Congressional Republicans' commitment to recycling rather than just throwing these old ideas in the trash.”
