Washington, D.C. - Today, the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) announced the appointment of Dr. Jalonne L. White-Newsome to be CEQ’s Senior Director for Environmental Justice. In this historic role, Dr. White-Newsome will advise Chair Mallory on environmental justice policy and help advance the Biden-Harris Administration’s bold and historic commitment to leverage the force of the full federal government in advancing environmental justice.
In response, Sierra Club National Director, Policy Advocacy and Legal, Leslie Fields released the following statement:
“The fight for clean air, water and the pursuit of justice in holding polluters accountable is imminent yet unending. We applaud the historic appointment of Dr. White-Newsome to the White House Council on Environmental Quality, as we know she’ll be a relentless advocate for all of us.
Our pursuit for a liveable planet hits home for all of us, especially in historically and majority Black, Indigenous and communities of color. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with the White House Council on Environmental Quality along with our grassroots environmental justice partners, who will continue to mobilize the most-impacted communities towards our collective pursuit of environmental and climate justice.”
