Biden y Schumer Tienen Que Dejarse de Cuentos y Aprobar la Legislación Climática

Al igual que no se puede negociar con pirómanos cuánto puede arder un edificio, es imposible negociar con un partido de negacionistas climáticos. Por décadas, la abrumadora mayoría de los republicanos del Congreso han dejado más que claro su opinión sobre el cambio climático: No hay nada que hacer, incluso si existiera.

 

Hace solo tres meses, el Senador Kevin Cramer respondió a preguntas sobre la crisis climática diciendo, “No está clara esta crisis que los alarmistas se han inventado”. Cuando se le preguntó qué les diría a los que se preocupan por la crisis climática, Cramer, respondió: “Lo que les diría es que la Tierra ha pasado por ciclos durante toda la creación”.

 

Al crear los demócratas la Comisión Selecta sobre la Crisis Climática, los republicanos asignaron miembros que comentaron que “El cambio climático causó que los vikingos dominaran Europa por varias décadas”, y que “Tengo mis reservas sobre lo real que es”.

 

Incluso cuando los republicanos son capaces de reconocer los hechos sobre el cambio climático, no están dispuestos a actuar para abordarlo. El líder de la Minoría del Senado, Mitch McConnell, desperdició décadas negando la existencia del cambio climático, y al mismo tiempo recaudó una pequeña fortuna en donaciones de contaminadores corporativos. Y ahora no tiene ningún plan para abordar la crisis. 

 

Ya es hora de que el Presidente Biden y los líderes democráticos rechacen este sinsentido y cumplan con sus promesas de abordar la crisis climática, y las crisis de cuidado de la salud, los empleos y la justicia social. Las comunidades y el planeta requieren urgentemente inversiones en la transición hacia la energía limpia, la reducción de la contaminación, la reducción de costos para las familias trabajadoras, la creación de buenos empleos y la promoción de justicia ambiental.

 

Durante el fin de semana, las manifestaciones de la Lucha por Nuestro Futuro atrajeron a miles de personas por todo el país para decir “¡ya basta!” a Biden, el Senador Chuck Schumer y los congresistas demócratas. Los líderes políticos han tenido suficiente tiempo para confeccionar un audaz paquete de inversiones climáticas. Ahora, les pedimos que actúen como líderes y creen y aprueben con premura un presupuesto de reconciliación que invierta en la acción climática como se merece al mismo tiempo que se aseguren de la equidad económica y la justicia ambiental. Biden and Schumer Must End Charades and Advance Climate Legislation

Just as there’s no negotiating with arsonists on how much of a building they can burn, there’s no negotiating with a party of climate deniers on climate action. For decades, the overwhelming majority of Republicans in Washington, DC have made their views on climate change abundantly clear: It’s much ado about nothing, if it even exists.

Just three months ago, Senator Kevin Cramer responded to questions on the climate crisis by saying, “It's not near the crisis that the alarmists have made it out to be.” When asked what he would tell those concerned about the crisis, Cramer replied, “So what I would tell them is that the Earth has gone through cycles for as long as there's been creation.”

As House Democrats created the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, Republicans assigned members who have claimed “[Climate change] led to the Vikings dominating Europe for several hundred years,” and, “I do have reservations about how real it is.”

Even when Republicans are capable of recognizing the facts about the climate crisis, they’re unwilling to take any action to address it. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell wasted decades denying the existence of climate change – collecting a small fortune in donations from corporate polluters along the way – only to now have no plan to address the crisis.

It’s past time for President Biden and Democratic leadership to reject this nonsense and deliver on their promises of action on climate, care, jobs, and justice. Our communities and our planet urgently need investments in transitioning to clean energy, reducing pollution, cutting costs for working families, creating good jobs, and promoting environmental justice.

Last weekend, Fight For Our Future rallies drew thousands of people across the country saying “Enough is enough” to Biden, Senator Chuck Schumer, and Democratic members of Congress. Our elected leaders have had enough time to hem and haw on a bold package of climate investments. Now, we ask that they show true leadership and swiftly create and pass a budget reconciliation bill that invests in climate action at the scale necessary while ensuring economic equity and environmental justice for all. The time is now. Let’s get it done.
