[Las Vegas, Nevada]: Today, the Sierra Club announced its endorsement of Susie Lee for Nevada’s U.S. Congressional District 3 in the 2022 election.
“At a time when members of Congress must act with urgency to fight the climate crisis and protect our planet, I appreciate that the Sierra Club has recognized my leadership and endorsed my re-election campaign,” said Rep. Susie Lee. “Nevada is at the epicenter of the effects of climate change, and our state needs conscientious leadership so we can continue to cement our standing as a leader in clean energy, build a more sustainable economy, and create more clean jobs and a better future for Nevada’s families. I will always be on the frontlines of the fight against climate change, and I am proud to have the Sierra Club as a partner.
"We are pleased to announce today that the Sierra Club officially endorses Susie Lee for re- election," said Tobi Tyler, Toiyabe Chapter Political Committee Chair. "We are confident that she will continue work to protect Nevada families’ health, air and water, and build a clean energy economy that works for Nevadans."
We are at a critical moment. The pandemic, which has touched nearly every one of us, further exposed the inequities embedded in our economy, and the climate crisis continues to threaten our clean air and water, our public lands, and our collective futures. That’s why it is more important than ever to elect champions like Susie Lee who will prioritize our communities and our future. Representative Lee has fought tirelessly to block funding for Yucca Mountain and urge consent-based solutions for nuclear waste. She introduced the Large-Scale Water Recycling Project Investment Act to create a water recycling grant program for large-scale projects in Nevada and sixteen other western states. She also helped pass the Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act to help transition us to a low-carbon future, and the Natural Resources Management Act that permanently reauthorizes the Land and Water Conservation Fund, protects a million acres of public lands from mining, and saves taxpayers $9 million.
"We are deeply grateful to Susie Lee for introducing in May 2021 the End Speculative Oil and Gas Leasing Act, which would promote more appropriate land-use management by prohibiting oil and gas leasing on public lands that have been determined to have little to no potential for energy development", said Nick Christenson, Co-chair of the Toiyabe Chapter Political Committee. "She is a true environmental champion who will fight to protect Nevada’s clean air, clean water, our climate and natural treasures such as Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead National Conservation Area, and Avi Kwa Ame."
Along with the endorsement, the Sierra Club will lend its volunteer strength to Susie Lee's campaign.
"We pledge to do all we can to help ensure Rep. Lee is re‑elected," said Nick Christenson. "Scores of Sierra Club volunteers will contact voters on her behalf and we will speak to the public as often as possible about her exemplary environmental record. We look forward to a victory for Susie Lee on election night and to Susie Lee fighting for the environment as a U.S. Representative."
