WASHINGTON, D.C. – As the Senate reconvenes, the Sierra Club calls on Congressional leaders to fulfill the promise of the Democratic majority and urgently pass legislation to build back better and protect voting rights, in the face of unrelenting obstruction from Congressional Republicans. It’s also time to do the critically important work of funding the government with the Biden budget. Democrats can help safeguard our democracy, economy, and planet by crafting a path forward for immediate passage of the Freedom to Vote Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, the Build Back Better Act, and Biden’s budget.

In Response, Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce Released the Following Statement:

“Senators have an extraordinary and increasingly urgent responsibility this month to safeguard our democracy, pass the Build Back Better Act, and fully fund the government with the Biden budget. It is not an option for Congress to fail to act on behalf of voters, workers, families, and a livable climate.

“On all three priorities, we know a deal is possible, in sight, and our only option for moving this country forward and tackling the urgent crises our communities face.

“President Biden and Democrats won the White House and Congressional majorities by campaigning on this bold and urgent agenda, which is why we cannot wait any longer to build back better, to strengthen our democracy, and to ensure a fully-funded government reflecting updated priorities for the year ahead.”
