WASHINGTON, D.C. – Amid ongoing technical consultations with the Senate parliamentarian and negotiations with key figures in Washington, D.C., progress on the transformational Build Back Better Act continues to move ahead despite total republican obstruction. Just as important, separate negotiations continue on the path forward to protect our democracy and voting rights for people nationwide by passing the Freedom To Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

Meanwhile, the Child Tax Credit, a critical support to parents and working families especially during the pandemic, is set to expire on December 28.

In Response, Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce Released the Following Statement:

“We cannot wait to invest in our children and working families, we cannot wait to lower the rising costs of childcare, of prescription drugs and of Americans' electricity bills, we cannot wait to tackle the climate crisis and invest in clean energy jobs nationwide, and we cannot wait to secure our democracy by protecting voting rights.

“We urge the Senate to complete work on this essential legislation and ready it for debate on the Senate floor first thing in January.

“For months, climate, labor, childcare, eldercare, working family advocates, and congressional champions have cleared every hurdle in the path to get Build Back Better, the Freedom To Vote Act, and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to the finish line. We are confident we will cross that line in short order to deliver a victory worthy of our children’s future.”
