La Agencia de Protección Ambiental Finaliza Regla Que Refuerza los Estándares de Limpieza de Vehículos

Washington, DC — La Agencia de Protección Ambiental (EPA) anunció hoy su regla final de estándares de limpieza de vehículos, la cual reducirá las emisiones del sector transporte y protegerá la salud pública y el clima reforzando el rigor de emisiones a partir de vehículos de 2023 a 2026.

 

La decisión final surge tras meses de presión por parte de una diversa coalición de grupos ambientales, médicos, religiosos y de consumidores, tras años de defender los estándares que la administración previa debilitó. En septiembre, más de 200.000 personas urgieron a la administración Biden a reforzar la regla propuesta y eliminar las evasiones legales de la industria automotriz para abordar la crisis climática, la justicia racial y la salud pública. Además, 21 procuradores generales, el Distrito de Columbia y seis ciudades instaron a la EPA a reforzar esta regla.

 

 

“Aplaudimos a la EPA por escuchar al público y la ciencia climática, y actuar prontamente para reforzar los estándares federales de limpieza de vehículos, la herramienta más eficaz para reducir las emisiones. Tras un año marcado por los desastres climáticos que han arrasado a comunidades de todo el país, como incendios y calor extremo en el oeste, huracanes y bajas temperaturas récord en el Golfo e inundaciones en el este, es más evidente que nunca que los impactos de la crisis climática están empeorando. 

 

“Lo que hagamos ahora tendrá repercusiones en años venideros. Urgimos a la agencia a también actuar para establecer los estándares más exigentes que aceleren la rápida transición a vehículos de cero emisiones y así proteger el bienestar de las comunidades atacando la mayor fuente de contaminación del país”.

Environmental Protection Agency Finalizes Federal Rule, Strengthening Clean Car Standards

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Environmental Protection Agency announced its final rule for federal clean car standards, which will curb emissions from the transportation sector and protect our health and our climate by strengthening the stringency for model years 2023 through 2026 for cars and light-duty trucks.

This final action follows months of advocacy from a diverse coalition of environmental, health, faith, and consumer organizations, after years of defending the Obama-era clean car standards from the previous administration’s rollbacks. In September, over 200,000 people urged the Biden administration to strengthen the proposed rule and drop automaker loopholes in the final rule in order to act on climate action, racial justice, and public health. Additionally, 21 state attorneys general, the District of Columbia, and six cities urged the EPA to strengthen its rule.

As a response, Sierra Club President Ramón Cruz, issued the following statement:

“We applaud the EPA for listening to the public and the climate science and acting swiftly to strengthen the federal clean car standards, our nation’s most powerful tool to slash emissions. After a year marked by climate disasters that have ravaged communities across the country, from fires and extreme heat in the west, hurricanes and record low temperatures in the Gulf, and flooding in the east, it is more evident than ever that the impacts of the climate crisis are worsening. 

“What we do now will have rippling effects for years to come. We urge the agency to get moving on the strongest possible long-term standards that rapidly accelerate the transition to zero-emission vehicles to protect the well-being of our communities by addressing the nation’s top source of pollution.”
