DETROIT, MI - Today, President Biden will visit a General Motors EV factory in Michigan to discuss the opportunity for electric vehicle manufacturing investments to reduce climate emissions in the transportation sector and improve air quality in communities, as well as the significance of supporting unionized workers as we shift to a clean energy economy.

During today’s visit, President Biden will also urge Congress to pass the Build Back Better Act, which includes critical investments to transform the status quo of our transportation systems. These investments include electrifying the country’s federal fleet including Postal Service delivery vehicles and dirty diesel-spewing fleet of school buses, building half a million electric vehicle charging stations in communities nationwide, and cutting the price of an electric vehicle by $12,500 for working and middle class families while supporting electric vehicle manufacturing at unionized U.S. factories.

In response to Biden’s visit, Katherine Garcia, Acting Director of Sierra Club’s Clean Transportation for All campaign, and Gail Philbin, Director of Sierra Club’s Michigan Chapter, released the following statement:

“With the Build Back Better Act, a future that delivers climate action and economic justice is possible. President Biden’s visit to Michigan today, home of the auto industry, represents what that looks like. The clean transportation investments in the Build Back Better Act will help us reach our climate goals while creating millions of good union jobs in the industries that will power a cleaner future.

“We urge Congress to pass this transformative bill now to support communities in Michigan and across the nation.”
