WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the Environmental Protection Agency released its annual automotive trends report, which found that automakers need to do more to deliver real world emissions reductions.

The Biden administration is finalizing its federal clean car standards and is expected to release a final rule by the end of the year; advocates have been urging the EPA to adopt the strongest possible standards with no credit giveaways to automakers in order to achieve the greatest real world reductions in emissions. The current proposal would treat each electric vehicle as multiple zero-emission vehicles when measuring compliance— allowing automakers to continue to manufacture dirty fossil-fuel powered cars.

In response, Katherine García, the Acting Director of the Sierra Club’s Clean Transportation for All campaign, issued the following statement:

“This EPA trends report reiterates the need for the agency to adopt the strongest possible federal clean car standards to drive the most impactful emissions reductions in communities across the nation to advance bold climate action, public health and justice.

“EPA must rein in credits and loopholes in its forthcoming Clean Cars rule. We can’t rely on a regulatory system that allows a massive credit bank for automakers to continue to crank out more gas-guzzling cars and trucks. Strong regulations at the federal level are what will keep the auto industry accountable to electrification and set the U.S. on a path to get to 100 percent electric vehicle sales by 2035.”
