RSVP FOR THE GRASSROOTS LEADERS CLIMATE SUMMIT HERE
Washington, D.C.-- On Tuesday, October 19 grassroots climate leaders and activists, representing 44 organizations across 19 countries in the Global South, will come together for a four day virtual summit hosted by the Sierra Club and Friends of the Earth US. All too often, the people and communities who are most affected by the climate crisis are not centered at official international climate meetings. With the G20 Leaders’ Summit and the UN Climate Summit in Glasgow (COP26) fast approaching, the Second Global Grassroots Leaders Climate Summit will provide space for grassroots climate leaders and activists from outside the US to convene and speak directly with US decision-makers so that their voices and demands can be addressed. This event is a continuation of virtual conversations held among grassroots leaders from the first-ever Global Grassroots Leaders Climate Summit earlier this year.
The summit will foster a sharing of ideas and first-hand accounts aimed at enacting meaningful change on the global level, which is critical to support healthy and safe communities around the world. Grassroots leaders will be calling on US climate negotiators to immediately stop the flow of financing to destructive fossil fuel projects around the world, increase US support for renewable energy deployment in Global South countries, ensure that coal is replaced with renewable energy instead of gas while halting plans to build gas plants around the world, among other priorities.
