PHOENIX, ARIZONA - Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema voiced her strong support for climate action in an interview with the Arizona Republic Thursday which was also amplified by reporting in the New York Times

As Senator Sinema told The Republic: “In Arizona, we’re all too familiar with the impacts of a changing climate … from increasing wildfires to the severe droughts, to shrinking water levels at Lake Mead, damage to critical infrastructure — these are all the things that we’re dealing with in Arizona every day,” … “We know that a changing climate costs Arizonans. And right now, we have the opportunity to pass smart policies to address it — looking forward to that.”

In Response, Sierra Club Grand Canyon Chapter Director Sandy Bahr Released the Following Statement:

“We appreciate Senator Sinema’s comments about the significance of the climate crisis to Arizona, and we urge her to embrace the need for immediate passage of the Build Back Better Act because it is our last, best chance for generational change to tackle the climate crisis at the speed and scale necessary.

“One thing above all is clear: the costs of inaction on climate change outweigh, by orders of magnitude, investments in bold and necessary action to tackle this crisis.

“The Senate’s bipartisan infrastructure plan includes some limited climate measures which on their own are wholly inadequate to the challenges presented by the climate crisis. Arizona cannot afford delay, and we cannot afford for Congress to do anything that undermines policies like the bold Clean Energy Payment Program, clean energy tax incentives, a civilian climate corps, eliminating fossil fuel subsidies, environmental justice funding, restoring protections for the Arctic Refuge and so much more that are at the core of the Build Back Better Act and President Biden’s agenda.”
