Poland’s national oil and gas company has terminated a 20-year deal to import fracked gas from Sempra’s proposed export facility in Port Arthur, Texas. The cancellation comes in the wake of multiple delays to the Port Arthur facility, due in part to a failure to line up enough contracts to make a final investment decision.
Port Arthur LNG is one of more than 20 facilities proposed by the industry, primarily along the Gulf Coast, to export fracked gas overseas.
In response, Sierra Club Senior Campaign Representative Roddy Hughes released the following statement:
“The cancellation of this deal is yet another reminder of the volatility and risk of investing in fracked gas exports. The industry wants us to believe that their massive proposed expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure is a done deal, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality, these proposed projects are risky investments that would threaten communities already overburdened by fossil fuel extraction while locking in global climate catastrophe. America should be a leader in the global movement towards clean, renewable energy, not polluting our communities at home and pedaling risky investments in dirty fossil fuels abroad.”
