WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Yesterday, the National AFL-CIO President, Richard Trumka, passed away. Trumka was a pillar of the American labor movement, previously having served as the president of the United Mine Workers of America. Trumka dedicated his life to advocate for labor rights and was a true ally of Democracy for all working families.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“A lifelong champion of the labor movement, workers rights and safety, and democracy, Richard Trumka put the well-being of working Americans first. Trumka’s outspoken support for democracy and his leadership as a voice of the American labor movement was exceptional and will be greatly missed. The Sierra Club sends our condolences to Trumka’s family, friends, union members and affiliates of the AFL-CIO.”
