El Sierra Club Aplaude Nuevos Estándares de Limpieza de Emisiones de Vehículos, pero Exige Más Mejoras

Washington, DC — La Agencia Federal de Protección Ambiental (EPA) propondrá una revisión de los estándares de emisiones climáticas y eficacia energética para los carros y camiones ligeros nuevos.

 

La administración Biden calificó de prioridad absoluta enmendar el debilitamiento de estos estándares por parte de su predecesor. Esta propuesta es el primer paso en enmendar y restaurar una de las herramientas de política energética más efectivas para combatir la contaminación del sector transporte —la fuente principal de polución de carbono en Estados Unidos. 

 

La EPA y el Departamento de Transporte también atacarán las emisiones de camiones semipesados y pesados. Regular las emisiones de camiones tiene importantes ramificaciones de justicia ambiental ya que beneficiará a los que más sufren la contaminación de diésel; es decir, las comunidades de color, como los latinos.

 

El Presidente Biden también anunció una orden ejecutiva por la que compromete a su administración a lograr que el 50% de los vehículos que se vendan en 2030 sean de emisiones cero. Sin embargo, para acelerar adecuadamente la transición a vehículos limpios, la administración debe aumentar su objetivo al 60%. 

 

 

“Nuestras comunidades, nuestra salud y nuestro futuro merecen una acción climática audaz. Cada año vemos el empeoramiento de los desastres climáticos y las consecuencias injustas de la contaminación del aire, a la cual el sector transporte contribuye más que cualquier otro. El Presidente Biden tiene que aprovechar este momento y elaborar estándares de limpieza automotriz más exigentes como una de las herramientas en la lucha climática más efectivas. 

 

“El Sierra Club continuará movilizando a sus millones de miembros y seguidores para lograr estándares más exigentes que logren reducir las emisiones y a largo plazo eliminen por completo la contaminación automotriz, un objetivo imperativo y alcanzable”.

EPA’s Proposed Federal Clean Car Standards Important First Step But Must Be Improved

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will propose revised greenhouse gas and fuel efficiency standards (or “clean car standards”) for new light-duty cars and trucks.

The Biden administration made reversing the Trump administration’s weakening of the clean car standards a Day 1 priority. This proposal is the first step in restoring and strengthening one of our most effective policy tools to address pollution from the transportation sector, the leading source of carbon pollution in the US.
 
The EPA and DOT will also tackle transportation emissions from medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Regulating truck manufacturers is a major environmental justice issue and will benefit the communities -- overwhelmingly communities of color and low-income communities, such as Latinos -- that suffer from diesel-polluting truck traffic.
 
President Biden also announced an executive order today committing to a target that 50% of new cars sold will be zero emission by 2030. However, to adequately accelerate the transition to zero-emission cars, the administration should increase the target to 60%. The U.S. requires vehicle emissions standards that meet the moment.

Each year, we’re experiencing worsening climate disasters and the inequitable consequences of polluted air, with transportation making up the bulk of emissions driving the crisis. President Biden must seize the moment and craft stronger federal clean car standards, one of our most impactful tools for climate action. 

“The Sierra Club will continue to mobilize its millions of members and supporters in our push for the strongest final rule possible that will deliver emissions reductions and put us on track to achieve 100% zero emission vehicle sales by 2035, an achievable and imperative target.”
