Washington, DC — La Cámara de Representantes, liderada por el Representante Sewell y su liderazgo parlamentario, aprobó ayer la Ley John Lewis de Mejora de los Derechos del Votante (VRAA) tras ser reintroducida la semana pasada.
Esta aprobación restaurará y reforzará la Ley de Derechos del Votante de 1965, y restaurará y expandirá la Sección 2 de dicha ley, la cual fue desmembrada por la Corte Suprema por segunda vez a principios del verano.
La VRRA protegerá a los votantes de leyes discriminatorias antes de que entren en vigor. Además la Ley para el Pueblo, la cual también aprobó la Cámara Baja este año, incluye profundas reformas democráticas de sentido común, incluyendo el registro automático de votantes, reglas más estrictas sobre ética y financiación de campañas, restaurar los derechos electorales de 1,7 millones de expresidiarios, y la prohibición de la reconfiguración fraudulenta de distritos electorales, entre otros.
Coincidiendo con la introducción de casi 400 leyes de supresión del votante en 49 estados solo este año, las aprobaciones de la VRAA y la Ley para el Pueblo solidifican el compromiso de los demócratas a proteger los derechos del votante y la democracia. Ambas leyes esperan ahora a ser aprobadas por el Senado.
Como respuesta, directora del Programa de Democracia del Sierra Club, Courtney High, emitió la siguiente declaración:
“El Sierra Club aplaude al Representante Sewell y a los líderes demócratas por aprobar la Ley John Lewis de Mejora de los Derechos del Votante y dar este enorme paso para asegurar que nuestra democracia sea justa, próspera y que sirva a todos los estadounidenses sin importar su código postal, raza ni ingresos.
"La fortaleza de nuestra democracia se basa en cuántas personas tienen acceso justo a las urnas. La aprobación de la VRAA reforzará y expandirá directamente este derecho. Sierra Club Applauds House for Passing John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act
WASHINGTON D.C.-- Yesterday, the House, led by Representative Sewell and House Leadership, passed the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA) after it was reintroduced last week.
The passing of the VRAA will restore and strengthen the full power of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and will restore and expand Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which was gutted by the Supreme Court for the second time earlier this summer.
The VRAA will protect voters from any future discriminatory anti-voter laws before they are implemented. Additionally, the For The People Act, which passed the House earlier this year, includes comprehensive, common sense democracy reforms, including automatic voter registration, stronger rules around ethics and campaign finance, restored voting rights for 1.7 million formerly incarcerated people, a ban on partisan gerrymandering, and more.
At a time when nearly 400 voter suppression bills have been introduced in 49 states this year alone, the passing of both the VRAA and the For The People Act in the House solidifies Democrats’ commitment to protecting voting rights and our democracy. Both the VRAA and the For the People Act now await a floor vote in the Senate.

"The strength of our democracy hinges on how many people have fair and equal access to the ballot box -- the passing of the VRAA will directly reinforce and expand this right. The Sierra Club calls on the Senate to protect our democracy by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the For the People Act without delay. Both bills are critical for protecting our democracy and preserving the freedom to vote for all Americans."
