The Interconnected Crises We Face Won’t Wait on Senate Republicans’ Intransigence
WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, the White House has eclipsed the deadline by which Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the country needed a clear direction for the proposed infrastructure package. Previously, President Biden had set Memorial Day weekend as the deadline for negotiations.
Voters across political parties overwhelmingly support a big, bold infrastructure package that centers labor, climate, and justice and that invests in more than just physical infrastructure but also in regenerative agriculture, public institutions, caregiving, and ecosystem restoration.
In response, Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce released the following statement:
“Unlike Senate Republicans, who have shown time and again they’d love nothing more than to run out the clock to block any progress from ever being made, the interconnected crises we face wait for no one. Our friends, our families, and our communities are suffering every day from systemic racism, climate-fueled disasters, economic inequity, unhealthy living conditions, and lack of access to clean air and water. People in dire situations cannot continue to wait while some argue for President Biden to keep pursuing the dead-end path of catering to the whims of Republicans who reject climate science and deny our communities’ needs.
“Congress must move forward and pass a large-scale infrastructure package that prioritizes frontline communities, creates millions of family-sustaining jobs, cuts climate pollution in half by 2030, and advances gender, environmental, Indigenous, economic, and racial justice. There is no alternative path.”
